Study of the role of particle-particle dipole interaction in dielectrophoretic devices for biomarkers identification

A three dimensional Coupled Monte Carlo-Poisson method has been used to evaluate the impact of particle-particle dipole interactions in the equilibrium distribution of a system of uncharged polarizable particles suspended in a static liquid medium under the action of an oscillating non-uniform electric field generated by polynomial electrodes. We compare the simulated distributions with experimental ones both for micro- (MDA-MB-231 breast tumor cells) and nano-(multiwall carbon nanotubes) particles. In both cases the equilibrium distributions near the electrodes are dominated by dipole interactions which locally enhance the DEP effect and promote long particles chains.

Ciclohexadespipeptide beauvericin degradation by different strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Abstract The interaction between the mycotoxin beauvericin (BEA) and 9 yeast strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae named LO9, YE-2, YE5, YE-6, YE-4, A34, A17, A42 and A08 was studied. The biological degradations were carried out under aerobic conditions in the liquid medium of Potato Dextrose Broth (PDB) at 25 °C for 48 h and in a food/feed system composed of corn flour at 37 °C for 3 days, respectively. A strain of Lasiodiplodia mediterranea, a fungus associated with grapevine decline in Sicily, produced several metabolites in liquid medium. Two new dimeric γ-lactols, lasiolactols A and B (1 and 2), were characterized as (2S*,3S*,4R*,5R*,2'S*,3'S*,4'R*,5'R*)- and (2R*,3S*,4R*,5R*,2'R*,3'S*,4'R*,5'R*)-(5-(4-hydroxymethyl-3,5-dimethyl-tetrahydro-furan-2-yloxy)-2,4-dimethyl-tetrahydro-furan-3-yl]-methanols by IR, 1D- and 2D-NMR, and HR-ESI-MS. Microcinematographic Studies of Mycoplasma hominis Cells

Cells of two strains of Mycoplasma hominis growing in liquid medium on a glass surface were observed continuously, and cinematographic pictures were taken. Most of the observed structures showed reversible changes of their shape, suggesting the presence of contractile material in membrane or cytoplasma. The frequency and speed of such variations were measured. The deformations seem to be related to multiplication. The mechanisms of these phenomena are unknown.

Antifungal Activity of Bioactive Metabolites Produced by Trichoderma asperellum and Trichoderma atroviride in Liquid Medium

Trichoderma spp. are known as biocontrol agents of fungal plant pathogens and have been recognized as a potential source of bioactive metabolites. The production of antimicrobial substances from strains T. atroviride (TS) and T. asperellum (IMI 393899) was investigated. The bioactivity of 10- and 30-day culture filtrate extracted with ethyl acetate was assessed against a set of pathogenic fungi and oomycetes. The 30-day extracts of both strains had significant cytotoxic effects against the tested pathogens, with values of minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) ranging between 0.19 and 6.25 mg/mL.
